Sailing to Hydra on a friend’s yacht (lucky me) was a wonderful unexpected weekend experience.

My second trip to Hydra happened to involve sailing to Hydra.  When Stefanos and I were invited to go on a friend’s yacht with more friends, at the last minute (as Greeks do), we couldn’t say no!

We had the weekend free so we packed and offer we went with a group of friends to sail around the closes island chain to Athens called the Saronic islands.

We sailed to Poros, Aegina and then Hydra.  

Hydra was my favorite. I had been once before via ferry. It was fabulous to just cruise right into the picturesque port and hop right off: no lines, no traffic and no waiting.

Hydra Travel Tips

Cars are not allowed on the island. You can get around the way locals do: by foot, by donkey and by water taxi.

Beaches are best accessed by water taxi. You can find water taxis that stop at nearby beaches at the docks.

How to Get to Hydra

You can hire a private boat or helicopter.

However, the easiest and most economical way to reach Hydra is by ferry from the port of Piraeus. The trip is 1.5 hours long.
The companies called Flying Dolphins and SpeedCat have many ferries departing each day from the port.  You can check www.openseas.gr for updated timetables.  The tickets cost around 10 Euro/one way.
