Here’s my quick guide about traveling to Bergamo, Italy.

Getting to Bergamo:

International travelers can fly into Orio al Serio International Airport (BGY) which is 45 km from Milan.  Check out the best airfare deals on Vayama.

A convenient airport bus service runs daily to and from the airport every 30 minutes and the journey takes about 20 minutes.  For more information, visit: www.atb.bergamo.it

Also note that many low-cost airlines fly into Bergamo, including Ryan Air.  Direct flights from Athens are about two hours.

Getting Around Bergamo:

There is a cable car called the funicolare which shuttles you between the Citta Alta and the Citta Bassa (upper and lower towns).  There is also a local bus which stops at convenient locations for sightseeing.

The local train station can be reached by bus. From the train station, it is super easy to connect to day trip towns around the Lombardy region. You can buy tickets at the kiosks or at the counter stations or online. One site I like is www.goeuro.com

For many, renting a car is the best option to explore the region.  I recommend finding a great deal with Avis Europe.

Where to Stay in Bergamo:

Many historic homes have been refurbished into quaint bed and breakfasts in the Citta Alta.   I recommend  Casa Mario Lupo.  Check out my review.

For a top luxury stay also in the heart of the Citta Alta, I recommend the design driven, luxury boutique  Gombit Hotel Check out my full review here.

Where to Eat in Bergamo:

I ate incredibly well at these restaurants:

Damimmo  – This cozy restaurant is known for their amazing pizza and neat deli area.

Head to La Vendemmia for delicious Bergamo dishes.

Ristorante Della Funicolare for drinks, delicious bites and a view.

My favorite is Baretto Di San Vigilio. This restaurant has the most stellar reputation, excellent fine dining options and a view that is Instagram worthy. Excellent service too. Reservations recommended.

If you visit the Scanzorosciate area, La Taverna Babale is a must.
